The Maze.
Garden City, N.Y., Doubleday, Doran and Co., 1945
A macabre tale by the pioneering Swiss fantasy author Maurice Sandoz, and later the basis for a 1953 horror film of the same name. Its surrealist overtones are perfectly matched by the illustrations by Dali, whom the author had met in Rome in the late 1930s.
First edition, first printing, signed by the illustrator; 8vo; frontispiece and 12 black and white full-page plates by Dali, internally clean and bright; publisher's blue-grey cloth, stylised maze design in blind, centre square in red with gilt lettering, gilt titles to spine on red ground, minor bumping to spine ends, with the price-clipped pictorial dust-jacket by Dali, some toning, loss to head and foot of spine, minor loss and nicks to extremities, tear to foot of spine at joint, small repair to reverse of front panel; housed in a custom brown cloth clamshell box, lined with attractive geometric patterned paper, titles to spine gilt.
