A novel nominally set around a mine rescue, ordinary people coming together and forgetting their differences in the face of a catastrophe, from the author of RUR and War of the Newts. Published by Unwin during that brief period in the late thirties that saw them venture into fiction. Besides Čapek they published works by M.P. Shiel and of course J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit.

First English edition, first impression; 8vo; publisher's orange cloth, titles to upper board and spine in black, orange topstain, dust-jacket with artwork by Ludwig, a superb copy in a glorious dust-jacket.
