Bock obtained private funding, especially from Arthur Hay, 9th Marquess of Tweeddale, for his journey to Sumatra and Borneo from 1878 to 1879 under the authority of Johan Wilhelm van Lansberge, Governor-general of the Dutch East Indies.
Second English edition; 8vo (26.5 x 19 cm); 30 coloured lithographs by C.F. Kell after Carl Bock, coloured folding map by Edward Weller as frontispiece, 7 in-text engravings, front cover of publisher's gilt cloth bound in, frayed upper margin of title neatly repaired, ownership inscription to half-title; later half green morocco, cloth boards, spine lettered in gilt in six compartments, a very good copy; xvi, 344 pp.
