Sport in Abyssinia;

Scarce. Written by a British Lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards who disembarked at Massawa in 1874 on a hunting trip in northern Ethiopia and left in 1875. He gives an indication of the numerous wild animals which roamed in the area but were soon to be decimated as a result of the import of firearms. There is an interesting description of Emperor Yohannes IV's military adviser, General Kirkham. The author refers briefly to Asmara, then a village, as well as to the market town of Adwa and the Bogos country to the west.

'The author's hunting party traveled through the Mareb River region of Abyssinia and encountered lion, gazelle, hartebeest, and elephant. While there are many incidences of sport, much of the narrative is of travel in the area.' (Czech).
