SENANCOUR, Etienne Pivert de.
Obermann.
Obermann.
Stock Code 86141
Paris, Charpentier, 1840
Echoing much of the sentiment of Rousseau's Reveries of a Solitary Walker, Senancour's themes of disillusionment and hopelessness in the face of modern, changing Europe and increasing industrialisation were not initially appreciated, but went on to find considerable success in the 1830s once championed by the Romantic authors of that period. George Sand was a key supporter of the work, identifying in it the essential evolution of the romantic hero in fiction, and the work was compared favourably to Chateaubriand's René.
12mo. Half-title with advertisements on verso. Contemporary green sheep by Khi of Moscow 1843 (signed & dated in gilt to binding margin), elaborate gilt ornaments to boards and spine, moire endpapers, green silk bookmark, gilt edges.
Vicaire VII, 473.
