A milestone in LGBT literature, The City and the Pillar is significant for its sympathetic portrayal of a homosexual protagonist, defying social norms post-World War II. It is also recognised as one of the definitive war-influenced gay novels, being one of the few books of the time to deal directly with male homosexuality.
First edition, first impression; 8vo; bookplate to front pastedown, else unmarked internally; publisher's black cloth, gilt lettering to spine, spine ends slightly bumped, lettering a little dulled, with the unclipped dust-jacket, slightly rubbed and soiled, a few small nicks and tears to extremities, else very good.
