Hanway regarded tea as dangerous to the health, leading to scurvy, insomnia, dental deterioration, and gastrointestinal disorders. For this he was criticised by Samuel Johnson, a keen tea drinker, in the Literary Magazine and The Idler, where Hanway appeared as 'Dick Wormwood', a man whose sole delight is to find everything wrong.
Second edition, 2 vols; 8vo; 2 folding engraved frontispieces, contemporary calf gilt, red morocco labels, light wear to extremities, a very good example.
