This is the first English edition of The Rhine as separate from Northern Germany. This volume was the first edition published after the formation of the German Empire and the acquisition of Alsace and part of Lorraine from France, giving an interesting picture of these provinces under the new masters. Endpapers "July 1873".

Fifth edition. xlii, 290pp, 15 maps and 16 plans; publisher's original old type binding, gilt lettering bright; a very good copy.
