Kipling's first published collection of prose, published shortly after he turned 22 years of age, whilst living in India as a jobbing writer and journalist. Contains forty short-stories by Kipling, 28 of which had appeared in the Civil and Military Gazette, many of which are set in the hill stations of Simla.

First edition, second issue; 8vo (19 x 13 cm); a couple minor marginal repairs, otherwise internally clean and unblemished; publisher's pictorial cloth of the second issue, gilt lettering to spine, preserved in a later protective case, text-block a little shaken, a very good copy; xii, 283, 32pp.
