The Five Jars by M.R. James, master of the ghost story, is the author's only novel, taking the form of a fairy tale in which the narrator describes five stone jars containing a magical substance that allows its imbibers to engage with the fairy folk.

First edition; 8vo (215 x 150 mm, 8 1/2 x 6 in); 7 plates, plate 6 detached and loosely inserted, some spotting and browning, owner's inscription in ink to front free endpaper, small unobtrusive tear to top of front hinge; publisher's cloth, extremities bumped with some discolouration to spine and boards.
