The author accompanied Stanley on his expedition to rescue Emin Pasha, the German-born Eduard Schnitzer, who had succeeded Gordon as governor of Equatoria in Southern Soudan but in 1885 had been caught up in the Mahdist uprising.

First U.S. edition, 8vo, xxiv, 490 pp., frontispiece, twenty wood-engraved plates, illustrations in the text, lacks map & facsimile of the Mahdi's Letter, modern half morocco gilt, all edges gilt.
