One of the greatest of British travellers to the Far East, Fortune, a plant-hunter gathered many valuable specimens. His expeditions, undertaken on behalf of the East India Company, to the heart of the tea producing areas of China, were also journeys of exploration as Fortune was the first European to venture here. The seeds and plants he gathered were shipped to India and became the foundation of the plantations in Darjeeling and Assam.
