Members of the expedition included Shipton and Smythe. Unfortunately it was unsuccessful but three members of the expedition did set an altitude record for climbing without supplemental oxygen that was not broken until Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler reached the summit of Mount Everest in 1978. The book also includes an account of efforts to obtain permission from both the British and Tibetan Governments to climb Everest through Tibet in the twentieth century.
