Java. Naar schilderijen en tekkeningen.
Amsterdam, Frans Buffa & Zonen, [1872].
Java includes platestern Java which hitherto had been scarcely depicted.
Abraham Salm (1801-1876) was a merchant and self-taught artist who came to Indonesia from Amsterdam and settled in Surabaya, Java. He lived in Indonesia for twenty-nine years and painted numerous landscapes, mostly of Java, twenty-four of which were selected for this work. The views were printed from three plates and finished by hand.
First edition, folio (58.5 x 40 cm.), 24 hand-coloured lithographed plates by J.C. Greive after A. Salm, mounted on card, numbered and captioned on the mount, list of plates on verso of title, original brown cloth lettered in gilt to upper cover, rebacked red morocco, corners bumped, tissue guards, a very good copy.
