Good asociation copy with letter from the expedition's geologist. Scott's account of his National Antarctic Expedition of 1901-1904.

With tipped-in card bearing Royds' monogram, on the note paper of the battleship H. M. S. Emperor of India (of which he was in command from 1914-1919): "The Voyage of Discovery" / to U. S. / from C. R. / who took part in it / September 30th 1917. Signed on front free endpaper; Charles Royds.

Royds was first lieutenant of the RRS Discovery on Robert Falcon Scott's National Antarctic Expedition. Cape Royds in Antarctica was named after him.

The letter from Ferrar contains suggestions for the geological investigation of the expedition depending on whether the scientists were south or North of Mount Discovery at the head of McMurdo Sound.

Scott was given the command of the National Antarctic expedition and was made Commander of the Discovery. The expedition was organized by the Royal Geographic Society and the Royal Society and its aim was the scientific exploration of South Victoria Land and the ice barrier, discovered by Sir James Ross, and the interior of the Antarctic continent. Scott made sledge journeys inland with Shackleton and Wilson. He made the first long journey towards the interior of Antarctica, and in addition to surveying the coast of South Victoria Land and taking soundings of the Ross Sea, important scientific discoveries were made in the fields of zoology, magnetism, and meteorology.

First edition, first impression. 2 volumes, 8vo., presentation copy from Charles Royds, photogravure frontispieces, 12 coloured plates, 12 monochrome plates, 158 half-tone photographs, 5 double-page panoramas by Dr. E.A. Wilson and other members of the expedition, 5 maps (1 double-page, 2 folding in end-pockets), original blue cloth gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut, moderate light foxing as usual, neat repairs to spines, a good set. [WITH] a 1 page autograph letter, signed, from the expedition's geologist, Hartley Travers Ferrar, dated September 1st.
