The first edition of Tolkien's tales of The Silmarillion, set in an age when Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwelt in Middle-Earth, and the High Elves made war upon him for the recovery of the Silmarils, the jewels containing the pure light of Valinor.

First edition, first printing, domestic issue printed by Billings; 8vo (23 x 14.5 cm); map tipped-in to rear free endpaper, no stop after Fëanor on p.330 line 4, light spotting to endpapers and fore-edge, excised bookplate to front pastedown; publisher's dark blue cloth, gilt spine, original unclipped illustrated dustjacket, slight fading to spine, ends a little creased, small residue mark to upper cover, very good.
