Shabbath and Eruvin;

A work interpreting the Jewish Mishnah (Misna) laws of the Shabbath for the Christian reader. The work divided into two parts: 'Misna: or the Traditional Laws relating to the Sabbath' and 'Eruvin: or the Traditional Laws relating to Sabbatic Mixtures'. The work includes two fold-out woodcut illustrations by Joseph Lord: Table I - Manner of labour forbidden on Sabbath, e.g. cooking, and carrying from domain to domain. Table II - Eruvin, or city limits. Beautifully ornate head and tailpieces throughout.

William Wotton, D.D. (1666-1727) was a linguist and classical scholar, specialising in Latin, Greek and Hebrew. He studied at Catherine Hall, Cambridge, taking his degree in 1679, and later obtaining a fellowship at St. John's College, Oxford. He became chaplain to the Earl of Nottingham, who, in 1693, presented him with the rectory of Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire. He published works on the subjects of education, history and religion.
