One of the great nineteenth-century colour-plate works. Illustrated with 50 fine aquatints of exceptional quality, it is probably Alken's finest work. 'Perhaps Alken's best known and most comprehensive work' (Schwerdt, I, p.19), The National Sports of Great Britain contains illustrations of horse racing, angling, shooting, fox hunting, and coursing, as well as prize fighting and cock fighting.
Folio (48.5 x 31.5 cm), engraved additional title dated 1821, coloured by hand, 50 hand-coloured engraved plates, text in English and French; nineteenth century green polished half calf gilt, red morocco label, presented in original cloth backed slipcase, a fine clean copy.
