Collection: Henry Alken

Henry Alken (1785-1851) was an English painter and engraver chiefly known as a caricaturist and illustrator of sporting subjects and coaching scenes. He is now widely regarded as the finest artist in that field and his works are avidly collected.

Alken’s work was commissioned by the leading colour-plate publishers of the day such as Ackermann, Mclean, and Fuller. Amongst his finest works are: The National Sports of Great Britain (1821); Humorous Specimens of Riding, (1821); and Life of a Sportsman (1842).
